St. Mark, Evangelist
The oldest Christian tradition assocaited with this day is the singing of the litany in procession through the countryside to keep mildew from affecting the wheat harvest. There was a relic of this agricultural concern in the Gospel previoiusly appointed for this day (John 15:1-11) which told of the vine and the vinedresser.
